Valentin's day specials

 Valentine’s Day

So, today is Valentine’s Day. And guess what? I’m not spending it curled up in my room with Netflix, binge-watching rom-coms while eating my weight in chocolate. Nope. Today, I’m hanging out with Caleb. And honestly? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually kind of excited.

I spent the whole morning trying to figure out what to wear. I know, I know, it’s just Caleb, but I’ve been overthinking it way too much. What if I wear something too fancy and look like I’m trying too hard? Or, worse, what if I look like I didn’t try hard enough? After trying on half my closet, I settle on a simple cute sweater and jeans. Perfectly casual, but still, you know, kind of cute.

My phone buzzes at noon. It’s Caleb.
“Hey! I was thinking we could grab lunch at that new place in town? The one with the huge milkshakes?”

I instantly smile. The place with the massive, over-the-top milkshakes? Yeah, I’m definitely in.

I meet Caleb outside, and when I see him, I feel this wave of relief. He’s wearing a simple hoodie and jeans—nothing too fancy. It’s comfortable, relaxed, and somehow, that makes me feel like I don’t have to be perfect. Just me.

He greets me with a grin, and we walk into the restaurant together. The place is packed with couples, but it’s not too overwhelming. There’s this laid-back, fun vibe, and it’s actually kind of nice not to be surrounded by all the overly sweet, “perfect” Valentine’s dates I see on social media.

We order our milkshakes (which are as ridiculous as they sound—mine’s topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a whole donut) and just sit there, chatting about random stuff. Caleb tells me about his latest video game obsession, and I laugh at the way he gets all excited talking about it. Honestly, it’s kind of adorable.

After lunch, we decide to take a walk through the park nearby, and it feels so easy. There’s no pressure. It’s just… nice. We talk about everything and nothing at all, and the more we talk, the more I realize how much fun I’m having.

We end up at a bench by the lake, and Caleb, without missing a beat, casually mentions, “I’m really glad you decided to hang out today. I’ve wanted to do something like this with you for a while.”

Wait—what? Did I just hear that right? I glance at him, unsure of what to say, but Caleb looks at me with that relaxed, genuine smile of his, and I can’t help but feel all warm inside.

“I’m glad you asked me,” I say, feeling brave all of a sudden. “This has been a lot of fun. I didn’t know what to expect, but… yeah. It’s been great.”

He laughs. “Me neither. I’m usually terrible at this whole Valentine’s thing, but this feels just right.”

I look at him, and I can feel my heart flutter. Is this… is this actually happening? Like, am I really having a good time on Valentine’s Day, and with Caleb, no less?

We hang out for a bit longer, just enjoying the day, and eventually, we decide to grab a casual dinner at a little diner. Nothing fancy, but it’s perfect.

As the day winds down, Caleb walks me to my door. I feel a little nervous, unsure of how to end it, but he just smiles at me again and says, “I had a really good time today. Maybe we could do this again sometime?”

I feel this goofy smile spread across my face. “Yeah. I’d like that.”

And just like that, my Valentine’s Day ended up being the best one I could have asked for. Not because it was the most over-the-top or perfect day ever, but because it was real. It was simple. It was just two people enjoying each other’s company without any of the pressure or expectations that usually come with Valentine’s Day.

And maybe that’s the best kind of love there is: the kind that doesn’t need all the bells and whistles, the kind that just happens when you’re with someone who makes you feel good about being yourself.

As I head inside and flop onto my bed, I can’t help but think—maybe this Valentine’s Day isn’t about having a perfect date. Maybe it’s about realizing that sometimes, the best things happen when you least expect it.

The End.
